There's been a few changes at AIWeather; here's just a brief list of some of them!

November 2012 Last Status Update 30 November 2012, 11:03 PM

  • Added a new "real time" graph to the graph page
  • Thank you godaddy... They crapped out asp for a few days... and somewhere along the lines, summarily deleted pages that they felt were bad.. .Earthquake page is gone... gone.

October 2012 October 2012

  • Those pesky pine needles - I was finally able to get up on the garage to clean out the rain gauge (The reason it hasn't reported rain: it's been clogged). I used some cheese cloth over it to act as a primary coarse filter -- hopefully this will keep it working thru the winter.

June 2012 June 2012

  • ***System is back online, replaced quad core cpu with new cpu. Drive #2 (the one that holds all the weather software) is in pre-failure mode. When this drive dies, I will probably pull aiweather.com
  • *** The CPU cooler fan had stopped, possibly cracking the CPU (would not boot) -- I have replaced the CPU & cooler, but it may go down again as I installed spare (used) cpu & fan (as well as hard drive).
  • *** I was able to replace the boot (windows) drive - but the 1 terabyte drive is in failure mode; not sure if I want to buy a new hard drive to ware house the data for the website (graphs/trends)
  • *** Hard drives (both of them) have failed; attempting to rebuild with some used harddrives I have.
It's called a coincidence: NO, these crashes are not me being a dick, they just happened to coincide with my comment below
  • Had to write a custom monitor app to monitor the port for reading weather data, if it is down, it will reset the port w/in 5 minutes.
  • I got a shitty email the other day about "site may go down" -- Please allow me: I have put over $3500 in actual cash out for the site. Countless hours to maintain it. I don't owe you anything; if I ask for a little financial help to either fix/relplace something or add functionality -- the right way to decline is "KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT", not belittle me for asking. "My toys" "My rules" Sorry -- ragging/ranting/complaining only works towards getting me to shut it down prematurely (before it actually fails catastrophically).

November 2011

  • Fixed Twitter feeds -- c'mon people... Let me know when stuff is broken!
  • Changed "alerts" on forecast page to include more "zones"
  • Fixed some issues with broken scripts
  • fixed typo's

March 2011

  • Fixed failure to upload the storm images (radar, java data file, etc)
  • Now running the Webcam software (imagesalsa) in a "virtual machine" (vmware) -- this should, hopefully, cause the constant resets of the main computerthis experiement failed... images & stickers will be out of commission until I figure something else.
  • Built a new machine, only running webcam / sticker software - Current up time: unknown
  • PLEASE DONATE! Trying to get enough money together for QFH antenna -- about $250. This will be used for getting realtime satellite weather images
  • Also trying to get together funds for WeatherSim ($250) - this will help give more accurate weather forecasts.
  • I received a fairly shitty email/comment about me "taking peoples money" - Listen, if you think I'm earning money off htis site & you still want to help -- I will give you a url of EXACTLY what I need to purchase and you can buy it, get it and hand deliver it to me sans a reciept so you know I'm not trying to steal from you. Honestly, I almost pulled the sight down - I do a favour for people; and I get shit on... not cool.
  • Fixed "fire danger" buttons & data/text.
  • Added UV forecasts to the forecast page.
  • Promoted "rapid fire" weather page to release.
  • Added UV forecast for 'today' to main page
  • Added "National Overview" to the others page
  • Added TOP warning summary to home page.
  • Added *MORE* to the "SandBox" page to display things I'm toying with.. Please let me know what you think josh at AIWeather.com
  • Added a Contact page to help contact me -- Great work by Mike Challis
  • Added
    & "rapid fire" weather page!
  • I know it doesn't look like it, but there has been a lot of work "behind the scenes" to keep the site working smoothly -- Please consider donating, I almost called it quits when I needed to replace the computer...
  • New tide graph!!! Please let me know if you see that the tide graph fails to draw.... I didn't realize it wasn't working
  • Lightning detection back in working order. PEOPLE: PLEASE TELL ME when this stuff stops working... I have the actual software here, so I don't visit the website all that often... The lightning reporting has been "offline" since December....
  • If you're using Chrome, the realtime lightning dection is slow to load... Chrome doesn't have great java support.
  • Lastly, Thanks go to Jim & Sandy Sheppard for a generous donation -- that donation allowed me to buy a much needed hard drive for the collection computer. If you see them, say "thank you"
  • I had to write my low-resource ftp application designed for ensuring uploads happen and don't leave partial files. jUpload is released to the public domain.

June 2010

  • Haven't done much recenty; been busy -- but I'm back into the 'weather geek' mode....
  • Working on some issues -- why no one told me I dunno... ( location)
  • Fixed tides page, hopefully for the last time!
  • Added some new lightning displays -- of course, they won't be made public until we get some lightning strikes and i can verify they work
  • Added Todo List which is my list of things to fix/do -- will be somewhat dynamic as i work on things. PLEASE if you see something broken, let me know: Click .
  • ImageSalsa is screwing up. Randomly, after a reboot, it no longer thinks the web cam is selected

February 2010

  • Added sponsor Jim & Sandy Sheppard. Thank you for your support!
  • Fixed web-camera mount
  • Fixed Tide page, again
  • Added Ferry Web Cams.

December 2009

  • Added Visitor Tracking (And took it off/not working)
  • Working on some more dynamic lightning maps

August 2009

  • PLEASE bear with me. Feel free to email me pages that don't work; but if they have details about PHP; godaddy refuses to let them work; I will not have time to fix them until I'm back from vacation. Remember, I don't make any money at this, and to date, only Anthony and anderson island realty has thought this was a good project.....
  • Yes, I know!!! 500 are back. Thanks Godaddy. They offer no tools for debugging. When asked about the errors, the same dull canned response 'we don't offer support for custom scripts'. WTF? A page 500's and there's no way to tell why? -- so until the server move is complete; we're hosed. I tried to use 'webhost4life'. They had good price, fast servers, really good customer support, but their ftp restrictions were unreasonable, I had nothing but pathing problems, and the ajax would not work; so I'm back to godaddy.. :(.
  • Moved to GoDaddy hosting while server is mvoed
  • GOBS of changes to handle restrictions for movign to godaddy; most changes will also bennefit the server once moved

July 2009

  • Added "Live Support" button -- Live Help & Supportif you see me "online" feel free to say "Hi!"
  • Well; not too much has happened recently -- cleaned the camera lens, cleaned & replaced the batteries on the weather station.  I'm working on putting some data directly from the marina.
  • I haven't updated in a while; but the power is back & steady; but Anderson Island Realty helped so much; that they are still considered our sponsor.
  • Fixed time-lapse video for webcam; it has failed since the new system -- just found out.
  • Fixed text on some buttons
  • Added Radar image from stormpredator.  (Will be adding time-lapse soon)

March 2009

  • UV Sensor replaced, appears good

February 2009

  • The UV sensor is bad again; it has been returned
  • Power situation on island is bad.   Our rates from www.tannerelectric.coop  have basically doubled or tripled, because the generator costs 1/2 million per month to operate -- as a result of this; I am only powering up the island computer 2 times a day to provide data to all the services we support (NOAA, etc).  We need to conserve as much as possible.  If you are an island business and would like advertising space on AIWeather -- contact me and I will keep the island-side computer online 24x7.  The other data (forecasts, marine data etc) are derived from other services.  With costs going from $.05/kilowatt to $.35/kilowatt -- I Just can't keep "hobbies" powered on.
Oh yea, and yes,, the beer fridge has been powered off -- c'mon by to help drain it!
  • Thanks to Anderson Island Realty -- A donation was made to keep AIWeather "online" during this troubling power situation.

January 2009

  • New computer has been built & placed into service.  I spent $400 to build a 2.6ghz quad core, 4gig ram, 250gig drive system.  I could really use help with this.  As a normal hobby; this would have not been purchased/built so quickly; I'd have let it "go" a bit longer -- I had 2 people at the store ask "When are you going to get aiweather fixed????" and more than  a few emails.  I could really use donations to help.  If you're a business; I'll put a rotating banner ad on the pages, if your an individual; I'll do the same if you want; regardless; there will be a "thank you" page.    Despite getting a lot of daily hits (for a little weather page...) and the write-up in the sounder; all I get are complaints about speed (I pay for bandwidth) or the occasional computer crash.  I don't earn money off this site; it's a hobby -- but if you think it's wortwhile -- kick down a few bucks to help.  To date -- Anthony of Anderson Island Realty is the only one that has helped out....

November 2008

  • Heard we were going to be written up in the Island newsletter; but I never got a copy of the article as promised, so who knows -- if you have seen a copy; please send it to me!
  • AITrayWeather is now available.  This will put the weather from our Weather station directly into your system tray!

September 2008

  • UV Sensor returned from Davis; UV readings back online
  • New Beer Fridge, adjusted "keg empty" temp threshhold.

August 2008

January 2008

  • Added Fire Icon for High Fire Danger alerts from Washington Department of Natural Resources for Pierce County
  • We continue to be plagued by the "500" error -- we have switched to a new ftp server to hopefully help reduce it.  please let me know if you experience errors!

December 2007

  • Added lots of code to (hopefully) prevent 99% of the "500 server error" messages due to page access during data uploads
  • Lightning detection / Reporting & Display, we are part of the StrikeStar network!
  • Updated forecast page to display our condensed forecast or NOAA's official detailed forecast.
  • Updated Marine info page

    • Special Weather Alert (Forecast Page)
    • Marine Warning (ie: Small Craft Advisory)
    • Thunderstorm detected (Storm Page)
    • Earthquake of 5.0 or more recorded w/in 150 miles of Anderson Island.  (The Quake page shows all quakes w/in 150 miles greater than 2.0)

November 2007

  • You can now listen to the current conditions, see the any page!
  • Time Lapse images w/data logged 4 hours & 24 hours.  I archive 168 hours if you want.
  • Revised Main page, travel & garden pages
  • Moon Phase "phrase" (waxing, etc)
  • "Feels like" temperature (THS)
  • 3 New Graphics for your web page
  • Local NOAA Weather Radio Broadcast.
  • Due to "500" errors, we've removed the automatic 5 min page-refresh, and replaced it with 10 minutes.
  • Conversion to Ajax for dynamic updates should be completed on all pages (Note: Some values do not change dynamically -- if you find one that you think should update, email me.)
  • Added "nearby earthquake" list.
  • Added Beer Fridge Temp (Summer is coming!)
  • Soil moisture & temp and leaf wetness readings! (Also includes 5 day history graphs)
  • Note: I have a lightning detection system here, but not yet installed.

October 2007

June 2007

  • Revised Web pages format, no does not upload actual web pages, but rather the data only; resulting in faster updates. [note: unfortunately; this leads to 500 series errors sometimes, we're working on it!]

Feb  2007

  • Added 20' to Anemometer pole.

January 2007

  • Went "online"
